Six-Point Critical Analysis of Current Event
1. Exploratory
With global warming on the rise ecosystems are losing a lot of biodiversity be it through drought, wildfire, and historical grazing practices. BLM, a managed agency, has made it their goal to evaluate vegetation in grazing lands. Through the BLM’s long research they have hypothesized and researched techniques to help bring back water level and biodiversity into these ecosystems. To test their new techniques BLM used satellite imagery taking pictures of two eras before and after that would take over 20 years to finally see what worked better for the land. BLM compared the traditional conservation-oriented approach to never letting the cattle graze the land. BLM’s traditional conservation used the “cool season” letting the cattle graze in spring and fall with periods of rest and rotation.
2. Diagnostic
As ecosystems continue to be hurt by urbanization, drought, wildfires, and the earth's rising temperatures it is important to look for ways to keep the lands we grow cattle healthy. BLM understands that there is not a world where we cant use earth's resources; however that does not mean that we have to kill our environment as well. By researching ways to keep grazing fields healthy we can intertwine both the interests of humanity with mother nature. It is important to never take too much and this research helps give back as much as the cattle takes.
3. Cause and Effect
If cattle are allowed to eat all season long resources in the fields will all be used up. However if techniques such as changing seasonal grazing to cold seasons vegetation will have time to bounce back, enhancing plant recovery. If beavers are introduced alongside rivers their dams will then allow for water to be longer stored during seasons of warm temperatures even droughts. These two additions to riparian ecosystems then experience significant ecological benefits ranging from leather pools of biodiversity and can even restore lands that have been grazed far too much.
4. Priority
Seek to identify the most important issue. (What is the most important issue?) The most important issue is finding a way to align human interests with the overall health of the environment. It is no secret that humans take far too much from the earth and that on this planet there are a limited amount of resources. By finding ways to keep the environment healthy and even saving lands ruined by grazing. Conservation-oriented grazing and beavers help earth's vitality for generations by still allowing us to keep cattle without destroying that environment overtime.
5. Application
These kinds of discoveries affect not only my life now but future generations lives. It is important to give back and make sure we as a society secure the future for our future generations. I have learned from this class just how much resources I take to keep me alive amplify that for how much it takes to keep billions of us alive. Research discovered by the BLM can be used all over the world where there is cattle. Not only on the practical scale of implementation this type of research shows the world and people that we do have people that are fighting for good causes and gives hope to environmental activists all over to continue their work.
6. Critical
This most definitely challenged my beliefs as I never did think such a simple solution of changing the time of which cattle are allowed to graze would actually be beneficial in any way. I always assume that cattle eating the vegetation would be harmful to that environment but with proper techniques such as beavers these lands could still live healthy. It is easy to see in all the ways we take resources from the earth and never return anything, however research like this shows me that there are ways for us to be able to look out for both interests. Papers and even videos like this show me how livestock grazing shows my assumption that grazing was always a bad thing for an ecosystem teaching me to always be more open minded to the possibility of aligning the interest of people and the environment.
